Hackathon
GENERATIVE
Design For Additive Manufacturing
The Problem
Automation has greatly enhanced car manufacturing efficiency and manufacturing scale, but the manufacturing paradigm remains unchanged.
The highly-automated age is still confronted with challenges: overcapacity, mass customization, reliance on supply chain and difficulty in iterating, which constrain the innovation in automobile industry.
The Vision
PIX Generative Hackathon aims to reimagine how cars are made and explore new automobile manufacturing paradigm with creative digital design approaches and new digital manufacturing processes, further driving innovation in the automobile industry and lighting a beacon for next-generation manufacturing.
The ultimate goal of PIX Generative Hackathon is to design self-driving cars which can meet the additive manufacturing capacities by using generative design approach.

WHAT
How to achieve 100x less car parts and assembly work + 10x less reliance on supply chains?
Hackathon Workflow
• Five-day collaboration
• Elaborate the AI-driven Generative Design Approach
• Reduce the structural parts of a traditionally-manufactured electric car to 10 parts
• Manufacture the car with 3D printing technology
PIX Generative Hackathon, envisioning a future where car designs are created by innovative designers in a way that hasn't been thought before.

MENTORS
01.
Metal 3D printing specialist at Cranfield University and Program Manager of WAAMMat
DR FILOMENO MARTINA
Programme manager, titanium development
Filomeno is lecturer in Additive Manufacture in the Welding Engineering and Laser Processing Centre, Cranfield University, where he’s contributing to developing WAAM. He received his PhD in Additive Manufacturing from Cranfield University in 2014; the main focus of his doctoral research was the manipulation of geometry, microstructure and mechanical properties of large WAAM titanium deposits. Previously he earned an MSc also from Cranfield and an MEng in Industrial and Management Engineering from Polytechnic of Bari (Italy).
02.
Chen Zhilei
Founder of KDN Automobile Design Co., Ltd., Wuhan. Certified lecturer of Autodesk Alias. Leaders in various international car design and manufacturing projects.
Chen Zhilei is the founder of KDN Automobile Design Co., Ltd., Wuhan. Specialized in CAS and Class A surface design of car design process, Chen has participated and led many automobile projects ranging from traditional car brands such as Citroen, Peugeot and Land Rover to innovation car projects including Amazon-invested delivery car, JD autonomous logistics car and also PIX self-driving car. Chen obtained the international certified lecturer of Autodesk Alias in 2011, after which he gave design training of Alias car body surface design for more than 50 sessions. Last year, KDN has incorporated Grasshopper parametric design into the research scope of surface generative design and has collaborated in multiple car projects since then.
